When Dimitris and I met and began to be serious about each other, one of the first questions asked was “Do you cook?” The answer was neither of us do. Therefore, the burden of cooking fell to us both, each specializing in whatever we could come up with. The other main question dealt with housework and yard work. In that area, we concurred strongly: Dimitris was a housekeeper; I was a yard keeper. Now, for three and one-half years, we have operated in the kitchen, in the house, and in the yard as we had decided at the beginning. I love caring for plants, planting flowers and pruning shrubs. I always enjoy an outing to the plant nursery. Dimitris warns me when he is going to be doing the extensive house cleaning so that I can get lost, giving him the time to clean the house from top to bottom. These cleaning times are where he earned the nickname “Mr. Meticulous.” We have made other decisions such as the title we use to present out legal commitment. Many gay men choose “husband;” we have chosen to use “partner.” Being open to discuss decisions that involve our partnership is certainly one of the most positive areas of our life together. We also say “I love you” a lot and pray before every meal at home.
