I Dream of Ice Cream

I love ice cream, particularly nut ice cream. For years, my very favorite was Breyers butter almond. Then it disappeared from the ice cream case at the store. I think my love of ice cream began at a young age when we used to churn our own ice cream. How exciting that was–putting together the ingredients, packing the ice cream churn with chunks of ice and ice cream salt, closing it and beginning to hand-crank the churn. The churning at first was not bad at all, but as the ice cream began to form, the churning became more challenging. The first thing to come out of the churn was the dasher. Everyone fought for it, especially the kids, who wanted to lick it clean before the bowls of ice cream were handed out. Today ice cream churns are electric and, I guess, they do a reasonably good job. However, the delicious taste of home-made ice cream in the “good old days” was a combination of good taste and energetic effort. I will admit that there are some good brands of ice cream in the supermarket refrigerator displays but nothing like the original home-made ice cream.ice cream churn
