Reading Naturally

Do you ever listen to professional speakers who are speaking as though they are reading rather than speaking naturally with natural pronunciation? Political speakers, especially those who use teleprompters, pronounce words the way words are pronounced when they are being read rather than being spoken naturally. Barack Obama was a master of reading a teleprompter but making it sound as though he were speaking off the cuff. President Trump is the worst, almost always sounding as though he is reading rather than speaking. Once when I was teaching a speech class, I had my high school students reading a line from the play, Twelve Angry Men. In the play, a young person is accused of a murder. One of the jurors is asked about information she remembered regarding one of the witnesses who claimed to have seen the boy. When the juror remembers, she says, “That’s right. Bifocals. She was wearing them.” My student who was to read and interpret this line read it this way: “That’s right, Bifocals. She was wearing them.” Obviously, the entire meaning is thwarted by the failure to observe the period after the word “right.” The rest of the students in my class loved the misreading.
