Take It Off

What in the world is going on in the world of jar lids? I don’t consider myself feeble, but twice recently I have found myself wrestling with the top of a jar. The first problem was with a jar of Vlasic dill pickles, something I enjoy very much. I had the yearn for a pickle, had let the pickles get cold in the refrigerator, but I could not get the jar of pickles opened. I tugged both directions, I hammered on the edges, I soaked the jar in hot water but could not get the top to turn. A neighbor finally came to the rescue. The second item was Kraft salad dressing–Miracle French, my favorite. I had my salad ready to eat–the tomatoes cut, the cucumber slices added, and the spinach leaves spread around. I was ready to eat my healthy meal but alas. Despite cutting away the plastic wrapped around the lid, I could not twist off the top. This time, it may have been the tapping that finally made it give. I feel sorry for people who are infirm and are depending on being able to open jars of food. I think we have gone too far in making jars of food child-proof, if that’s the reason for the tightness.
