The 5th of July

I’m writing this blog on the 3rd of July, hoping that the celebration of our nation’s birth has not been smudged by any blight of terrorism on this day after our patriotic holiday. Hopefully, Dimitris and I will have traveled downtown to watch the fireworks safely and with the optimism that is required as we celebrate our nation and our national leaders. I remember experiencing one of the most exciting 4th of July fireworks in Lake George, New York, one summer in 1959 when I worked at Sunnybrook Acres as a college junior. There were no thoughts of terrorism then, no armed guards insuring our safety. I have never thought that the war on terror was an appropriate title as we can’t fight and eliminate an idea. It must be won through changing attitudes and hearts. The brutality we hear associated with Daesh or ISIS is unbelievable and horrifying. I am grateful every day for those who are in our military and are combatting the terrorists who seem to keep multiplying. I leave you on a positive note: “God continue to bless America.”
