Until a couple of years ago, I had never heard of Dubai. Who would have thought that I would have visited there multiple times in the past three years. Dubai is in the UAE (United Arab Emirates), the capital of which is Abu Dhabi. Dubai is a city that has literally been raised out of the desert and is a tribute to man’s technical skills. Because of its newness and cleanliness, it has been dubbed the Arabian Disneyland. In Dubai, you will find the world’s tallest skyscraper, Burj Kalifa. Another must-see site is the Burj Al Arab, a so-called “seven star hotel.” You have seen pictures of it as it looks like a sailboat (see picture below). When we were there during this trip, we stayed at a Ramada and used both taxis and their very efficient and inexpensive Metro system for transportation. Dimitris loves the malls, which are extravagant. The Mall of the Emirates, one of the larger malls, contains a ski resort complete with lifts and real snow. In the summer, the high temperatures are intolerable but, like Florida, everything is air-conditioned. One final place you must visit is Madinat Jumeirah, a resort that is an authentic recreation of ancient Arabia, capturing the natural beauty of the region. When you go, you might want to ask Dimitris to go with you as a guide.
