My Premonition

Every Saturday morning, I bowl with Rick Coffman, my bowling buddy of many years. Last Saturday was no exception. I won the first game; he whomped me the second. Our bowling scores are frequently affected by the amount of time we spend talking as we bowl. We discuss movies, families, the school system, and politics mostly. Somehow, the conversation Saturday morning went to politics. Since we are both Democrats, the politics discussions are usually very pleasant and agreeable. My lament this time was that it appeared that Barack Obama was not going to have the chance to replace another Supreme Court judge. We both agreed that the most logical person to replace would be Justice Ginsberg as she appears to be the one with the most precarious health. However, we both agreed that she has certainly appeared to be very healthy lately. That conversation took place at 9:00 Saturday morning. At 4:00 Saturday afternoon, a breaking-news announcement scrolled across the bottom of my computer: “Justice Antonin Scalia is found dead in a Texas hotel.” Unbelievable. Of course, now the debate begins with Republicans having the upper hand. The irony of our discussion impacted both of us as we settled in awaiting for the repercussions from this unexpected death.
