The Bureaucracy

We, the public, often hear how awkward and slow the bureaucracy is. Lately, I have had three reasons to deal with the bureaucracy, and I have been amazed. When my partner went to the immigration office in Tampa to have his fingerprinting done, we were there less than half an hour. We took our number and were called rather quickly. Our next visit was to the Social Security office. Again, a number was taken, and this time we were called in just a few minutes. The lady in charge was charming, instructive, and left us with the promise that Dimitris would receive his social security card within two weeks. If not, he should contact the Social Security office. Finally, we visited the Department of Motor Vehicles. Again, the public servant called us almost immediately after we sat down to wait and was as informative and polite as he could possibly be. He left us with the instructions for getting a handbook, taking the written exam, and applying for an appointment for the driving test. With all the criticism of the bureaucracy, I have to put in a vote of confidence in those local government offices.
