First Look

I have a theory regarding the first time you meet someone and that theory is that you will never see them again the exact same way. Here’s what I base that theory on. When you first meet someone, you see them only physically: their face, their hair, their eyes, their body make-up. You may make judgments right away based on those seeming “facts.” In subsequent meetings, those first impressions will recede and become less important in your assessment of this individual. More important will be how much they smile, how well you respond to them and they to you. The physical characteristics will become less important and the emotional elements will take precedent. I remember well Ms. Huckaby, the lady who was my trainer when I was in high school working in a grocery store. The first time I saw Ms. Huck, I told my brother that I was working with one of the most unattractive females you could possibly imagine. After several years of working with this lady, she became “beautiful” in my sight: one of the most admirable ladies I would ever meet. First looks should be only of minimal importance in estimating someone’s true qualities.
