One of my Best Friends

My brother, Jackie, and I are three and one-half years apart in age. He is the younger. He lives in Georgia with his wife, Teri, and I live here with my partner, Dimitris. We are very much un-alike and yet perhaps 40% alike. We sound alike; we look a bit alike; we both used to smoke alike. But then we are totally on opposite sides politically. He is a Republican who has expressed approval for people like Sarah Palin. I am a strong Obama supporter and probably will vote for Hillary Clinton. I am gay; he is straight, and he is at least partially accepting of my life as a gay man. So far, he has not agreed to meet my legal partner but admits that he may change regarding that stance in the future. I love my brother, and I believe in many ways he loves me. However, I am, what he calls “in the cone.” His choice is not to communicate with me other than with e-mails. Today is his birthday, a day he does not particularly enjoy celebrating. Nevertheless, I will give him a call as I have never been able to completely shut him out of my life, believing that brothers should be forever best friends, regardless of the differences between the two. Je t’aime, baby brother.

Birthday ani
