Bless My Pea-Pickin’ Heart

In 1958 while I was still attending Furman University, I went on an adventure trip, all the way from South Carolina to Washington state. The purpose of the trip was to pick peas for Green Giant. I had seen an advertisement in a summer employment directory that I found in the college library and I, along with four other friends, decided working for Green Giant was the thing to do that summer. We worked out all of the details. Bill would provide the car, and we would all chip in and pay for the gas and any repairs that had to be made. We would take turns driving and mapped out our itinerary. We would definitely visit Yellowstone National park on the way out. Returning, we would come down the west coast to Los Angeles, cut across so that we could see the Hoover dam, the Grand Canyon, and spend one night in Las Vegas. However, there was one problem that summer: the pea crop failed because of a lack of rain, and we were sent home after working only one month. Although we had not earned very much, we hit all of our planned stops on the way home (except Hoover dam) and arrived home with a million stories but not much money.
