I am amazed that, according to an NBC poll, 51% of Americans support the use of EIT’s, which the Obama administration has labeled as torture. Surely those who responded affirmatively to the poll did not read the report which elaborated on the kinds of techniques that were included as “enhanced interrogation techniques.” They go from sleep deprivation to anal feeding to other things so gross that I would hope they were considered but never used. We are a better people than that, as President Obama has affirmed. No matter what former Vice President Dick Chaney may say, nothing justifies our nation’s use of torture. Even the head of the CIA has admitted that it is impossible to know how effective the EIT’s were in getting information. How far would we go as a nation to extract data from enemy personnel? Would we threaten to behead someone? Would we pull out fingernails? If we cannot define torture, how do we know how far we would go? Does our signature on the document signed in Geneva have no relevance today? As Jon Stewart said recently, “Thank you, Mr. Bush, for not dying while you were President of the United States.”
