The Two Faces of Maarten

As many of you know, Dimitris and I have just returned from a week in the Caribbean where we visited three beautiful islands–Puerto Rico, St. Thomas in the American Virgin Islands, and St. Maarten. While in St. Maarten, we learned that it is split between two nations. One section is Dutch; the other, French. St. Maarten is the smallest Caribbean island to house two countries. One side allows cock-fighting; the other does not. The French side has a clothing optional beach, the Dutch beaches require clothing. A French inhabitant’s call to France is a local call. A phone call from the Dutch sector to the French side of St. Maarten is an international call. Besides the contradictions, both sides of the island offer to travelers tropical splendor.
