Games with and without Friends

As I think of the games that I have played during my life, I think of several games that have caught my interest at least for a period of time. If crossword puzzles can be included in the category of games, then I have been hooked at times on these puzzles. For years, I worked the New York Times Sunday crossword with a friend. The two of us could complete one of those puzzles although I hardly ever succeeded when I tried to work one alone. Scrabble is another game that has intrigued me as has Boggle, a game I used when I was teaching high school to grab my students’ interest and broaden their confidence in spelling. Today, I play “Words with Friends” on the computer with three friends and enjoy the ability to add a word now and then without being intense. My favorite game, one which I never seem to tire of, is Spider Solitaire. I use Spider to fill time when I’m waiting for a TV program to come on or while I’m waiting to leave for an appointment. I enjoy Spider because it involves strategy as well as luck. My gym teacher stresses that we seniors must exercise not only our bodies but also our minds, and I concur. I therefore do not consider playing a game a waste of time but a sharpening of my mental skills.
