The Bookworm

As a retired school teacher, I can enjoy reading what I want to read instead of what I have to teach. A couple of years ago, I read Susan Vreeland’s Luncheon of the Boating Party, a book based on the Renoir painting of the same name. I enjoyed that book so much and was so fascinated with the painting that I made a trip to Washington, D.C., to see the painting at the Phillips gallery. I am presently reading a second book by Vreeland, Clara and Mr. Tiffany, which is about Louis Comfort Tiffany, the stained-glass producer. It too is excellent. However, the book that remains on my mind most is a book by Garth Stein, The Art of Racing in the Rain. The title is a turn-off, but the book is a treasure. A friend of mine turned me on to the book which he had discovered on display in a Barnes & Noble store. He told me that he sat down, started reading and found himself moved by tears of enjoyment. I highly recommend all three of these books with the most emotional one being The Art of Racing in the Rain.
