Memories of First Grade

Two of my grandchildren just went into first grade this year. It certainly brought back memories for me. I attended my first grade class at Florida Street Elementary School in Clinton, SC. It is probably a bit ironic that I have ended up the past forty years as a resident of Florida. That school certainly didn’t look like Florida nor did the street it was named for. I went to school with excitement, fear and trepidation. I was a mother’s boy and insisted Mother take me to school, which she did. We were able to walk to the school from my house although it was quite a walk. I remember seeing the older kids who served as crossing-the-road monitors, wearing their official-looking badges. At that time, most all of the school teachers were single females and therefore addressed as Miss So-And-So. My first grade teacher had been teaching for years, and we were told to call her Miss Lily. What an appropriate name as she was the whitest woman I think I have ever seen. In fact, she greatly resembled a female George Washington. Although that first day was terrifying, I fell in love with Miss Lily as I did Miss McCrary who was my teacher in second grade. Oh what memories! My best to Luke and Gracey as they begin their school days in first grade.
