Perfect Timing

One of my best friends is Pat Archibald, an educator extraordinaire. Pat and I worked together many years in education and became close friends in the process. However, after I retired from the school system before she did, I found that maintaining contact with each other was not so easy. One way we agreed to stay in touch was to call each other on our birthdays. Pat was still working at Perkins elementary when I called her there on her birthday. Her secretary answered the phone and asked who was calling. When I responded with “just tell her it’s Tom,” she over-reacted with an enthusiastic response far beyond any reasonable reaction. When Pat came on the line, I asked why in the world the secretary had responded so wildly. Laughing, Pat explained that, before my phone call, her secretary had just asked her, “What do you want for your birthday?” Pat had responded: “Tom Selleck.” Talk about perfect timing.
