We Gather Together

It seems appropriate that on this national holiday during which time we give thanks for all that we have received that I should share with you the “gifts” I have received. My three children, who are the pride of my life–Robin, Boh, and Todd–continue to inspire me as they make lives for themselves, their spouses, and their children. My three grandchildren–Luke, Gracey, and Carli–are such a joy. How thankful I am that I lived long enough to celebrate their births and their lives. Every chance I have to be with them is an anticipatory event that I relish. How should I be so lucky, being a gay man who was not supposed to have had children. That’s the irony of the situation, and I have to thank God for guiding me through that transitional period. It’s not that I was not a gay man when I got married, but I know that I believed I could live a straight life and be a good father, which I hope I was. Life is not always easy, and I feared when I was divorced that I would become what I had always feared, a pervert of some sort. That did not happen. My values and morals are intact. For that and my wonderful “gifts,” I am eternally grateful on this Thanksgiving, 2011.
